Welcome!

Welcome to our Eng 100 Blog “Conversations Beyond the Classroom”! The title of this blog refers to the community of active readers & collaborative learners we are creating by sharing our academic writing for Eng 100 with each other + a larger group of students, instructors, academics, and just about anybody who chooses to follow our blog! When you write and post your reader responses here (and, later, as you write your essays for the course), I encourage you to use this audience to conceptualize who you are writing for and, most important, how to communicate your ideas so that this group of academic readers and writers can easily follow your line of thinking. Think about it this way: What do you need to explain and articulate in order for the other bloggers to understand your response to the essays we’ve read in class? What does your audience need to know about those essays and the authors who wrote them? And how can you show your readers, in writing, which ideas you add to these “conversations” that take place in the texts we study?

As students of Eng 100, you will use this blog to begin conversations with other academic writers on campus (students and instructors alike). We become active readers of each other’s writing when we comment on posts here. And, best of all, we are using this space to share ideas! We encourage you to use this blog to further think through the topics and writing strategies you will be introduced to this quarter. As always, be sure to give credit to those people whose ideas you borrow for your own thinking and writing (you should do this in the blog by commenting on their post, but you will also be required to cite what you borrow from your peers/instructors if and when it winds up in your essays. More details on that later…).

Finally, keep in mind that writing to and for this audience is a good way to prepare for the panel of readers (faculty at WCC) who will be reading and assessing your writing portfolio at the end of the quarter. We hope that as a large group of active readers, we can better prepare each other for this experience. But, in the meantime, let’s have fun with it! I am really excited see how far we can take this together!

Commercial Assignment-Bryce jungquist



“The man your man could smell like” This commercial takes the approach by saying, using there product you can’t be like the man you see but you can “smell” like the man you see. Visually your mind is filled with fantasies as old spice goes from putting the actor into different setting and background proving visual fantasies so that we are twist into another reality. Not only does this advertisement put it in a way that’s appealing and funny to the audience, it also leaves them wanting to buy this item. Entertainment in a clever way will always attract people alike. Now lets break down this ad shall we, three parts its showing if you look carefully. The item they want to show you, what you are missing without it. And how better life will be with it. They say that with old spice you will become a man that smells good. But is that all that being attributed here? I say that the ad also portrays a young handsome man, where money and trips around the world can be achieved when using old spice. To be thrown into this sort of unrealism by a simple commercial is so common now a day’s, I would be lying if this was the first time I have seen it. They also proceed to go on and tell you that you can’t be like them without using it. My opinion if its so good why do you need to put air little tv segments to show just how fresh and clear scented you’ll be? Shouldn’t the word get around to all men and women that this amazing product is the one you “must” have in order to be all that you can be and smell like a true man. Is it A good voice for America? Or just another sales pitch trying to make money….

  1. This commercial is wanting us to surrender to image of what an ideal american man should look like. Its putting an idea into the male population that they need to look like that. The smell of the product is not even included. The style of the presentation is cool and rich, for example the yaht and the tickets that magicaly turn into diamonds and also men already think women like materialistic things. The beginning opens up disscussion generally between a couple who see this commercial because he says"now look at your man now look at me" by Tori and Aubrie

    we would like to add that the commercial makes it seem that if your "man" doesnt wear oldspice that hes a low life prick that will never be able to make his woman happy, content, or provide material things... therefore it makes it seem like men that do wear oldspice are successful, rich, and entertaining.

  3. The oppositions that are present are masculinity and femininity. Masculinity is shown favorably. The effects are that he would obtain more women and the lucky women would have the perfect man.

    The ad hopes the viewer will surrender to enhancing his masculinity and then women will be more atracted to the men. The ad is portraying that by buying this product you will become more of a man thus you can achieve whatever you want. In reality it is not your scent that makes you a man but its your personality.
